why upper castes amongst Hindus in India and other countries be called scheduled castes henceforth?
The very words Scheduled Castes ( SC ) in India casts doom to many deserving SCs in family owned as well as MNCs as those are predominantly controlled by the High Castes Hindus. .
The majority amongst HINDUs i.e BC/OBCs are deprieved of their legitimate auth to be in power to rule and to frame laws as is beneficial to the majority. Instead we have a situation where the APEX court packed with HIGH CASTES Hindus ( not because of merit but by evil design ) have resited introduction of laws beneficial to BC/OBCs .
It’s time we demand HIGH CASTES hindus be labelled as the ” SC ‘( ST for persons with Blue Bloods eg Maharaja lineage etc ) . The majority of the hindus i.e BC/OBCs be labelled as the GENERALCASTES . Supreme court of HIGH CASTES ( sorry India ) must realise it’s past mistakes and allows this to happen to avoid a full fledged CIVIL WAR.
There are several flaws in BPK’s argument, I might highlight some here.
His point 3. (a) In a reserved contituency they don’t vote for thier candiadte as BPK claims. All voters (irrespective of caste, creed or faith) vote for one of scheduled caste candidates seeking to be elected. The fact is that B.R.Ambedkar worked for separate electorate (SCs only electing their own legislator). In protest M.K.Gandhi went on an indefinite fast, asking for the present system we have now. Finally B.R.Ambedkar was prevailed upon to withdraw, which he did in favour of M.K.Gandhi culminating in ‘Poona pact’ between them. You ask any of the leaders of SCs, they call this pact a great betrayal!
(b) The seats reserved for them belong to them rightfully, on their population basis, not a seat less not a seat more. It is not that they are encroaching on to the others’ rightful share. Otherwise other caste people will represent them with the mandate of voicing SCs problems!
6. He refers to ‘past mistakes’ and says ‘destroyed India’. He is right there. Past mistakes only (like untouchability) destroyed India, to the extent that the other nations came to India, saw the lack of unity in Indian society splintered into high and low castes, exploited the weakness and ruled over the country for century after century (a millennium). Indian society is already at the bottom by the time of independence. Murphy said ‘You can’t fall off the ground’. Reservation has a narrow objective to set right the ‘past mistakes’ in some measure and will go away even if the aims are met halfway.
7. Loyalty to country must springforth from a person because he is grateful to his country and its society where he can hold his head high; or else it becomes a ritual and lacking in sincerety.
8. I believe him when he proclaims himself ‘against all forms of caste’. But can he not see the reality? The only reality in India is ‘caste’. Surname indicating caste directly or indirectly is more important than the person or his own name. Middle class professionals in cities may be living in their own paradise, but for those crores of people living in the gangetic plains caste is the only thing that matters.
My observation is – ‘ignorances of Sociology is humongous amongst the unreserved castes’. How many amongst the unreserved castes opt for ‘Sociology’ as a paper in civil services exams in India, unless they aim for a zero?
Writings like this one from BPK strengthen my conviction. Yet I cannot but sympathise with his lament. It is a passing phase. In India, always it has been that the supply is short, for everything. We are besotted with scarcities even for Medicine or Engineering seats in a society of a hundred crores (thousand millions). ‘Merit’ is a much maligned word and I lost faith in it, in India. Given a chance to overcome his condition of undignified existence, every one will prove his merit in one field or the other. And that alone will go to build a country which everyone feels proud to call his own. But instead hurdles are placed, against the spirit of the constitution. With such a meritorious people leading for two millennia, I have seen the country prostrated by mid twentieth century; that is why. Why should I heed ‘merit’ that does not do an iota of good to his fellow men, his society? I much less can do without such merit that is used only for selfglorification
