Black Lens
how do i use my fotar reflecting telescope? all i see is black after i take of the lens cap.?
This is a fotar reflecting telescope model 900114. We have tried both eyepieces that come with it and the barlow lens in all combinations but after we focus on an object and look in the eyepiece all we see is black. HELP!
Have you removed _both_ parts of the lens cap? Many scopes like this have a lens cap in two parts, like a doughnut and a hole. If you just remove the central “hole” part, the light will be blocked by the secondary mirror. You need to remove both parts of the lens cap so that the whole end of the telescope is open.
Don’t bother using the Barlow lens or the high power eyepiece. Use only the low power eyepiece (20mm or 25mm). When you look into the eyepiece holder without the eyepiece in place, you should see concentric circles: secondary mirror and primary mirror. If you don’t see concentric circles, the scope needs aligning. I’d recommend finding a local astronomy club and getting their help in aligning it:
