Can anyone help interpret this Invisible Man quote?
“I watched him smiling at first one and then another of the guests, of whom all but one were white; and as I saw him placing his hand upon their arms, touching their backs, whispering to a tall angular-faced trustee who in turn touched his arm familiarly, I felt a shudder”
This is in chapter 5, regarding Dr. Bledsoe and the whites at his party. What i’m trying to figure out is the importance of this segment. Invisible Man is a classic, so every word supposedly has a divine purpose. My thoughts are that Dr. Bledsoe wears a mask to fool both the whites and his students in order to keep his position of power. Could I go so far as to say he wants to be white himself?
What do you guys think? (You don’t have to just agree, you can have a completely different idea!)
That is exactly what it means. Bledsoe wants so much to be like the whites that he does everything he can think of to make them like him. As stated in your quotation he succeeds by getting one of the trustees to “touch his arm familiarly” and as a result shudders either with fear of the power that the whites possess over him or with delight that he is greeted by the whites as someone who is accepted.
