What is the purpose of the black barcode like design on the back of my state ID card?

we live in NC, USA
I noticed my parents have the same black barcode like design on their driver’s licenses. thanks in advance.

It’s a barcode. The name of the barcode symbology is PDF417. PDF stands for portable data file. The barcode holds all the information you see on the front of your drivers license. Name, address, birth date, license number, height, eye color etc. Agencies can scan this barcode and get all that information. Then they can use that information and look up your prior history, if any. Many bars will use it to get your birth date and then calculate your age. Department stores will use it to fill out forms electronically in an attempt to get people to sign up for more credit cards.

There are hundreds of barcode symbologies and this is just one of them.
