I worked for Cole Vision. They manufacture eye wear for Sears Optical and other outlets. The glasses I am wearing now have what you call magnifying glasses. They are reading glasses. They cost a dollar. I have several pairs. The reason the frames cost so much at places like Lenscrafters is that they use designer frames, pay very high overhead in rents and other factors. Frames themselves cost nothing to make practicaly. It is the high royalties to the designers that jack up the price. Sometimes you get what you pay for if you like things very stylish. But I have heard people say that other peoples glasses look “too expensive” ie. gaudy. And I have thought the same thing from time to time.
If you are lucky there is a discount optical dispensary near you. The draw back is that they sell end of run and samples. So, as in my case, when I needed glasses for near sightedness, I could not get the pair of matching sunglasses that I wanted as they only had one frame in the style I liked. Good luck.
