I’ve heard that a full frame digital back is being developed for the RZ67 that will retail under $7000. True?
To answer the first part of your question, I suspect that eventually we will see 6×7 backs within the next 4-5 years, but at that particular price point I highly doubt it. Although the no-sayers say there is no point in going beyond a 645 format there are some inherent problems in increasing megapixels by decreasing photosite size which in the past at least has usually produced a noisier image.
I do believe there is a sustainable niche market for example fine-art-reproduction that would like to ditch their high resolution scanning backs for something a bit more practical and portable. The technology as you know certainly exists to break beyond the 645 format as Dalsa just a few years back introduced a 4″x4″ 110 megapixel CCD, but I as I have heard they just dont have the manufacturing capabilities at this point to make a 6×7 chip affordable to the general professional photographic market.
However, with advances in scanning backs such as the 160 megapixel Seitz D3 http://www.roundshot.ch/xml_1/internet/de/application/d438/d925/f931.cfm which has made scanning backs a bit more practical perhaps Mamiya is working on utilizing this type of technology instead of CCD or CMOS technologies? Well I guess we will just have to wait and see.
