Roberto Cavalli was born in Florence, Italy, in 1944. He attended the Florence Art Academy. He is a Scorpio. He is the grandson of Guiseppe Rossi, the great Florentine impressionist painter.
Cavalli started his career in 1965 when he was 21 years old, painting T-shirts with a girl he knew from art school. Then he set up a factory to do the printing, with a few young men, then by accident in the early 1970′s he began to paint on skin which was the first time anyone had done it. The girls who summered at Capri and St. Tropez adored it. Italian Vogue took notice of the young Cavalli.
In 1977 Roberto was invited to judge a Miss Universe contest, and met one of the contestants Eva who became his wife and mother of their 3 children. She started by helping with the knitwear garments and now helps with all the projects at the Cavalli factory.
For 20 years Cavalli has been making sexy garments which have been very successful in Italy and other European countries. His Spring 2002 collection, shown in Milan, covered a long catwalk with stripes and roses, mixed up with his usual wild animal prints, slashed, decomposed and embroidered endlessly.
In 1999 the opening of a store on Madison Avenue, in New York, whipped up great momentum. All the New York girls started wearing Cavalli jeans. Hot girls in hot places identified with the high glam sensibility of Cavalli’s clothes. His clothes were worn by the stars of TV’s hot serial “Sex and the City”. Elton John was in the store for hours picking out clothes.
Over 750 labels presented menswear collections in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, Italy, for Fall 2002. Cavalli was the show’s favourite saluting his 20 year career. Cavalli himself opened a brand new boutique in the city’s historic centre.
Roberto Cavalli is now one of the favourite designers of show business celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige and Lenny Kravitz because of his whole strong approach, his colour, sexuality and boldness.
Spring/Summer 2003
Cavalli presented his Spring/Summer 2003 collection in Milan in September 2002. This is an outfit from that collection.
In Fall 2002, Roberto brought out his first fragrance. He was initially planning to call it Serpente, and in fact the bottle has the pattern of a snake’s skin, but then he called it “Roberto Cavalli Parfum”. It is as sensual as his clothing, blending sandalwood, citrus, rose and musk notes with the same verve as he mixes animal prints and florals on the catwalk.
Designer of the Year
In October 2002, in New York, the Fashion Group International voted Cavalli as the Designer of the Year, at a glittering function attended by all the New York fashion celebrities. He accepted the award gratefully saying “This means America accepts me”.
Fall 2003
Robert Cavalli had his audience gasping as usual, with his Fall 2003 shown during Milan Fashion Week in February 2003. With a Rio Carnival backdrop, his signature animal prints appeared, coral pink, lime green and yellow feather waterfalls cascaded from hip-high split robes or mini dresses with chiffon sleeves. His raunchy and rich theme would suit Las Vegas show girls or the Hollywood Oscar red carpet.
Spring/Summer 2004

His inspiration was the actress/singer Cher, and he opened his show with giant screen projections of her wild seventies moments. His prints, brilliant colour and cabaret sparkle are big news this season. Skin-tight cowgirl shirts and hourglass dresses gave kaleidoscope effects. He also tapped a softer side of seventies fashion with sexy, layered, drifting chiffon print dresses and deftly draped gowns with elaborately structured bodices. An ivory goddess gown seemed held together with crystals.
Fall/Winter 2004 ready-to-wear
Roberto Cavalli presented two collections in Milan during Fashion Week in February 2004. His first one was for “Just Cavalli” label which is for the younger woman. It was an upbeat and energetic show with top-stiched jeans, tailored denim jackets and leggings patterned with violines. He used influences from the 50s and the 70s, like distressed jeans and bomber jackets.
A few days later he presented his main line collection which looked like a Renaissance palazzo with sculpted elephants. Fabulous brocade and embroidery including a Lesage sunburst originally created for Schiaparelli in the 1930s. The designer used lavish jewels and artfully draped jersey gowns and even put embroidery on boots. The great showman did not disappoint us.
Spring/Summer 2005

His theme was “fashion traveler” and he embraced the mania for Africa which is everywhere this season, and gave a world tour with a lot of imagination and zip. His botanical prints of lemon, coral, butterflies, serpents and orchids were in profusion. There was a powerful sexual charge in many of his dresses, but he also used snowy broderie anglaise and white jeans scattered with sparkles, for an innocent effect.
Films
Roberto is planning to follow Tom Ford into films, he has teamed up with Italian film director Dino de Laurentiis to produce a film on Boccaccio’s “Decameron” and is investing some
$ 20 million in the project.
Autumn/Winter 2005
Roberto Cavalli presented his signature Autumn/Winter collection during Milan Fashion Week in February 2005. His gloriously glamourous and sexy dresses get better every season. His gowns are made for Hollywood Oscar ceremonies, in fuschia and powder puff pink, and glorious purple.
A few days earlier, Roberto had shown his other line Just Cavalli, when he was inspired by Russian imperial styles. Skirts had volume, snowflake crystal sweaters were worn, and snug denim military jackets with bell-shape dirndl skirts.
Spring/Summer 2006
Milan Fashion Week
Roberto Cavalli presented his Just Cavalli Spring/Summer 2006 collection during Milan Fashion Week in September 2005.
On the right is a dress from the collection, a multi-coloured printed chiffon creation with a very full skirt. It combines stripes and florals.
He takes colour from the seventies and cuts from the eighties with freill and volume, adding Victorian details like sleeves and bows, lacing, eyelets and patchwork. He showed floor length gowns and ultra mini dresses, in psychedelic floral colours.
A few days later, this colourful designer presented his Roberto Cavalli collection. On the left is a red chiffon dress from the show, embellished with golden disc belts under the breast and at the waistline. The neckline has been made with a gathered ring, and it has a floaty flirty skirt.
His inspiration was Palm Beach and Morocco. A tasseled tent led to a runway heaving like the ocean in motion. His intensely ruffled dresses in gingham, or flower patterns were mixed with a mature woman’s navy and red ensemble suddenly thrown in. He caters for all ages it seems. Gingham dresses were girlie, shorts were there as they are everywhere this season. The clear plastic striped trench coat was attractive. Kaftans had wild colours and patterns.
