Can I deduct what I spent out of pocket on dental work on my tax return this year?
I have a co-pay dental insurance plan where I pay anywhere from 20-50% of my dental work done and I spent probably more than $300 out of pocket this year. Can I add this to my itemized deductions on my tax return or will it not qualify? When I was researching this, it was sounding like the out of pocket pay must exceed 7.5% of my Gross Adjusted Income of the year or it doesn’t count; is this true? It’s a little confusing…
Also, can I add eyeglasses to the list? Say, when I paid $250 at Lens Crafters for the new glasses/lenses?
Unfortunately you are correct regarding the 7.5% of AGI (from line 37/38 of standard 1040), any amount above this is would count as a deduction. But you can add all your medical expenses, dentist, prescriptions, glasses, insurance premiums you pay, co-pays, mileage to and from appointments, etc. Add these up to see what they come to or if you prefer run the numbers if you have a tax software program. Multiply your AGI by .075 to get the amount you need to exceed to make your medical expenses deductible. For example $20,000 of adjusted gross income means $1,500 is the amount you need to exceed, so if you had $2,000 in combined medical expenses, $500 would be deductible.
