Mormons: what happened to the special spectacles that God gave Joseph Smith?
After God the Father and son Jesus materialized and spoke to him, and Moroni the angel gave him the spectacles to translate the gold plates did anyone witness and wear the spectacles besides J.S? That was in 1823. Also, when did he say that John the Baptist, Peter, James and John came to visit him in Pennsylvania? What was he in jail for when the angry mob killed him, along with his brother? following the loss of 116 pages, the Lord told joseph…….(DC 10:1-4)
1 NOW, behold, I say unto you, that because you delivered up those writings which you had power given unto you to translate by the means of the Urim and Thummim, into the hands of a wicked man, you have lost them.
2 And you also lost your gift at the same time, and your mind became darkened.
3 Nevertheless, it is now restored unto you again; therefore see that you are faithful and continue on unto the finishing of the remainder of the work of translation as you have begun.
4 Do not run faster or labor more than you have strength and means provided to enable you to translate; but be diligent unto the end.
so JS’s “gift” to translate was restored to him, but there is no indication that the nephite interpreters (Urim and Thummim) were returned after JS lost “them.” to clarify – after repenting, JS would recover the seer stones, but apparently not the urim and thummim/nephite interpreters.
‘materialized’?…….appeared. They appeared to him.
others saw them, yes – and may have held them as the descriptions provided are quite detailed. to my knowledge no-one else wore them.
the bestowal of the melchizedek priesthood occurred in harmony, pennsylvania. three days travel from the whitmer farm. after receiving the priesthood they were not yet allowed to ordain each other to the offices within that priesthood — but were told to “defer this our ordination until such times as it should be practicable to have our brethren, who had been and who should be baptized, assembled together, when we must have their sanction to our proceeding to ordain each other.”
they were jailed for charges of “riot” in regards to the destruction of the nauvoo expositor…..which led directly to the murder of JS and HS – but it came after a long period of non-LDS distrust, and attempts to extradite him on questionable basis. the destruction of the expositor was legal. however, it was not legal to have destroyed the type — BUT that was a civil matter, not a criminal one, and one for which JS made it apparent that he would pay a fine if one were imposed.
edit: for others — JS was arrested for inciting riots – this charge was changed to treason just prior to his death…..imprisoned illegally on that charge (treason) without a pretrial hearing for a felony. there were no charges concerning his beliefs connected with his arrest. adultery charges were a separate and previous thing.
