is it possible to dye a Charcoal satin dress black ?

i was wondering if it was possible to dye a Charcoal satin gown black. im going to be in a wedding and the bride wants black dresses but i cant find this dress in black and its gorgeous. can i dye it or have it done professionally and if i can what kind of business do i look to do it? ( like bridal shop or costume shop or a dress maker, im just not sure.) thanks very much appreciated

What fiber is it made of? It is easy to dye silk satin, but very difficult to dye polyester satin. And, is the dress washable? You can’t dye anything that is truly dry clean only. A better solution would be to buy some beautiful black silk satin fabric and get an expert local dressmaker to sew it into a dress for you.

Polyester cannot be dyed with ordinary dyes like Procion dye or Rit dye, and it can’t be dyed in the washing machine. It can be dyed only by boiling it for some time with a special polyester dye in an enormous expensive cooking pot, which must never again be used for food. (Never reuse a dye pot for cooking, because clothing dyes will contaminate the food.) It will usually cost less to buy a new dress than to buy a ten-gallon stainless steel pot.

Most commercial fabric redyers refuse to touch anything made of polyester, because of the risk that the boiling required will destroy the dress. The only one I know that will consider it is Manhattan Dyeing Service. Contact them (via the first link below) to find out how much they will charge to dye your dress.
