What is the difference between a calico and a tortoise shell calico?
I always thought that torties had no white…but I’ve looked at some pictures online of cats who appear to be calico (because they had white markings), but were labeled as tortoise shell.

You’re correct. Tortoiseshell does not have white. If there’s white in the coat along with Tortoiseshell then the correct term is “Tortoiseshell and White”, or more commonly called “Tortie and White”.
“Calico” is just another term for “Tortie and White” and really only used in the States. TICA uses Tortie and White, CFA and ACFA use Calico.
